{"id":35610,"date":"2023-08-04T10:20:19","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T08:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/?p=35610"},"modified":"2023-08-04T10:20:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T08:20:20","slug":"ali-innovative-per-il-convertiplano-civile-ngctr-td","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/en\/2023\/08\/04\/ali-innovative-per-il-convertiplano-civile-ngctr-td\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovative wings for the NGCTR-TD civil tiltrotor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"translation-block\">The activities of the <strong>FORMOSA (FunctiOnal aiRcraft MOveable SurfAces)<\/strong> project, launched in 2020 to redesign the wing control surfaces of the <strong>NextGen Civil TiltRotor<\/strong> (NGCTR-TD) civil tiltrotor produced by Leonardo, have recently come to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A tiltrotor is a <strong>hybrid aircraft that combines the characteristics of a helicopter with those of an airplane<\/strong>. The architecture of tiltrotors features two rotors, placed at the wingtips, which can rotate allowing the aircraft to take off (and land) vertically and, once the take-off manoeuvre is complete, rotate forward to turn into propellers, producing the thrust for flight, as in a classic propeller plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The project, co-ordinated by <strong>Prof. Vincenzo Muscarello<\/strong> (Department of Aerospace Science and Technology) and funded by the European \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clean-aviation.eu\/clean-sky-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clean Sky 2<\/a> programme, has made it possible to reduce the load of wakes on the wings in helicopter mode (-9% compared to the original project), enabling a reduction in fuel consumption during vertical take-off and landing manoeuvres.
