{"id":25006,"date":"2021-08-19T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/?p=25006"},"modified":"2022-11-23T09:49:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-23T08:49:59","slug":"nano-convertitori-ottici-ultraveloci-comandati-dalla-luce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/en\/2021\/08\/19\/nano-convertitori-ottici-ultraveloci-comandati-dalla-luce\/","title":{"rendered":"Ultra-fast light-controlled optical nano-converters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Designed and built a nano-antenna smaller than a thousandth of a millimeter capable of transforming the color of light, controllable through the light itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acsnano.1c03386\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> The article \"Ultrafast, All Optically Reconfigurable, Nonlinear Nanoantenna\" , which appeared in the prestigious ACS Nano magazine <\/a>, paves the way for the development of new <strong> miniaturized optical devices <\/strong> operating at very high speed, for applications in the telecommunications field and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FROM TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO LASERS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The new technology, conceived by the researchers of the <strong> Department of Physics of Politecnico di Milano, <\/strong> of the institutes of Nanosciences (Nano) and Photonics and Nanotechnologies (Ifn) of the National Research Council (CNR), together with the University of Brescia and Universit\u00e9 de Paris, is based on the study of <strong> optical nanoantennas <\/strong>. These are very thin cylinders of semiconductor material, 100 times thinner than a hair, designed to absorb wavelengths of visible light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">When the nanoantenna is illuminated, it concentrates the light energy in an extremely small volume. Under these conditions, the color of the light can be changed by a phenomenon known as non-linear generation of light. \"This process is of great interest in various <strong> application sectors, from telecommunications, where it is used to transfer information from one transmission channel to another, to night vision devices based on the conversion of infrared thermal radiation into visible light, to laser sources <\/strong> \"- says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eva-arianna-aurelia-pogna-518a7661\/?originalSubdomain=it\" target=\"_self\"> Eva Pogna, Alumna PhD in Physics at the Politecnico di Milano and young researcher of the CNR-Nano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"nanoparticelle \" class=\"wp-image-25218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/alumni.polimi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Post-social-RICERCA-5.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Erfan Afshari on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">INNOVATION<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now so-called static nanoantennas had been demonstrated, that is, such that once manufactured it was not possible to modify their properties, that is to reconfigure them to change the characteristics of the light that they can emit.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong> The new study is pioneering because it demonstrates for the first time the possibility of controlling the behavior of these optical nanoantennas very quickly <\/strong> using the light itself as a control signal: when a light pulse is absorbed in a nanoantenna it in fact it modifies the resonant characteristics.
